The Awful Ecstasy of Novelty

So there is an awful awaking that can occur when one least expects it...
A sobering moment condensed and distilled in the mind until it becomes a pinhead on which stands a profoundness and purity unlike anything previously felt or vicariously experienced. It has a texture as of yet untouched, but a weight that demands it be felt as a solid, burdensome thing. A cloying and intimate truth that stares unflichingly back at any protest or plea for ignorance. It is sensual in its flirtation with the senses, hinting at even greater truths should it's embrace be fully joined. But the persistent drum beat from the primal mind screams of fight or flight. Like the primeval snake fear, we know instictvely this is what mythology is made of...
Emotions so tuned to the limit that our chest feel bursting with their pressure, our eyes dilated like the prey of some great unseen beast in the mist.
What is it that could ensnare man's imagination so completely as to render all else a mere shadow of a forgotten dream?
