How reliable is the IM chat?

So I finally had some points to instigate conversations, but have no idea whether the<b> messages </font></b>were read or not, I dont know how reliable this IM feature is. Surely if there was 2 way conversation,then Polyamory Date can justify taking the points, but when there is no response, i think the points should remain until the other party has responded! Not a Gold member, and will never , especially as my experiences on this site have not been great. The old format before the points system was introduced was so much better!
