Loving the Ghost of Monte Cristo

High in the majestic Cascade Mountains
she sprang to life
the allure of riches gleaming

from the gold, panned from the clear, crisp Sauk river nearby
and she flourished where once only mule deer roamed

Like the pearl of great price
I was willing to give up all I knew
to apprehend her priceless love

Some towns rise from the earth---
consistent, steady, rock solid--- they endure
Other towns emerge like the passion
to seize an elusive love, and then they are gone
From the strangest of places, her allure beckons
as if from a parallel universe

As I walk through the ruins of old Monte Cristo
the outline of the original hotel
---crafted of rough-sawn wood---
speaks of the rugged, edgy men who inhabited this town,
not refined, but strong and steady
This wood once housed John D Rockefeller
prominent and proud it stood in its finest hour.
But now it lays a vestige of a bygone time
happiness and drinks no longer flow freely

once full of life, intrigue and excitement
the deserted streets are a haven for weeds
grown up through the cracks
of this hardscrabble earth
vapid except for the nostalgic memories
of glory days long since gone

Neglect and the loss of a dream
brought me to my knees
nothing left, but the memories
