Loving the Ghost of Monte Cristo High in the majestic Cascade Mountains she sprang to life the allure of riches gleaming from the gold, panned from the clear, crisp Sauk river nearby and she flourished where once only mule deer roamed Like the pearl of great price I was willing to give up all I knew to apprehend her priceless love Some towns rise from the earth--- consistent, steady, rock solid--- they endure Other towns emerge like the passion to seize an elusive love, and then they are gone From the strangest of places, her allure beckons as if from a parallel universe As I walk through the ruins of old Monte Cristo the outline of the original hotel ---crafted of rough-sawn wood--- speaks of the rugged, edgy men who inhabited this town, not refined, but strong and steady This wood once housed John D Rockefeller prominent and proud it stood in its finest hour. But now it lays a vestige of a bygone time happiness and drinks no longer flow freely once full of life, intrigue and excitement the deserted streets are a haven for weeds grown up through the cracks of this hardscrabble earth vapid except for the nostalgic memories of glory days long since gone Neglect and the loss of a dream brought me to my knees nothing left, but the memories |
