A Friend in A Stranger

A slender framed silhouette sits againsts a brightly lit cafe's window while various patron's come and go.The humble coffee shop was filled with the rich smell of roasted beans, tea and other such fragrents. With each jovial chime of the overhanging bell above the entrance made, the slim, feminate figure nervously met the eyes of those who would enter. Each bell, sounding the anxiety and echoing the apprehension comes from meetings like this. In an attempt to distract her worried mind, the woman pulls out a small pouch of tobacco, along with a book of zig zag rolling papers. She patiently waits, while carefully rolling a cigarette.

The mellow sound of jazz begins to become shallow, fading slightly as she exits the door. Outside the air was cold, a strong breez blew bits, of snow flakes off the slopes piled here and there thoughout the busy street. Exhaust trails piped stacks of smoke, billowing in heaps from vehicles strained against the low temperatures. The woman begins to scan the surrounding area, her eyes meeting those of a familiar face, her heart sinks.

The large figure walked closer to her, raising her anxiety with every step. The man stood well above her, his build was heavy, yet atheletic, his face bore the features of a man 'd seen his fair share of the world. His eyes were piercing blue marbles stared out from his masculine features, yet, they penetrated and soothed with each look. He reaches for his pocket as he begins speaking, "your pictures do you no justice". He continues probing his pockets.

"I was never one for taking pictures or<b> photography...</font></b>" she spoke, thinking of sounding confident, but her meekness and shy attitude came through her speech all the same. Her cigarette hung upon her perched lips, dancing as she shook, part from the cold, but mostly from him.

"I meant you look far better in person, my apologies for any offense", he said, as his hands pulled out a steel lighter from his heavy coat. gesturing with his lighter, she leans in towards him. he covers the flame, the amber light showing her soft features to him in greater clarity. Her large dark brown pupils flashed a gratious look towards him as she pulled back, smoke, trailing her plump lips.

"Thank you kindly, and the same to you, handsome" she said, trying her best to sound seductive or cool before she began coughing unexpectedly. Embarassed, she looked at him, "It's uhhm, it's pretty cold huh?". He smiles at her.

...The two began to speak, the world moved around them, and despite the weather, everything felt a little warmer.

This is a thoughtful and sweet vignette. Quite evocative. I like it.

You are a very good writer and storyteller. As many people do, was trying to figure out the story line as I read it. Trying to see if I could tell where it was going. I have to say I was a bit surprised when I got to the end. Good work.

Thank you for reading. I'm kinda trying to figure out a way to write a chapter in half a page without it seeming long winded, or too jarring. your feedback helps a lot.
