Date Nite 4

I assured her that it was
highly unlikely that I would be out and about among the typical urban savage..
I had stopped going to clubs back in the early 80s.. The club and bar scene in the city was an eclectic mix of country ,(where Mickey Gilley was the local legend) Rock, ( heavily influenced by that little band from Texas , , ZZTOP.)
And a smattering of reggae , blues, and soul themed strip center bars that were tucked so neatly back among the upscale retail shops that they were only known to the locals.. There were no bars in our little Livingston , Texas, Polk county was a dry county,.. Bootleggers sold 'Shine' in the still segregated 'Quarters'. A mason jar full of the corn competed with crack cocaine pretty well . Especially when each indulgence was a study in survivability.. Both shine and crack were sweeping whole neighborhoods clean of any moral or physical future... The drive bys, the gang wars , and the police over reaction had very nearly emptied the streets..
Then came Katrina ,That awful bitch from the most forsaken reaches of hell... Roaring ashore like the world was ending in an instant... For many it did.. The unfortunate , lucky ones barely escaped with only their lives.. Everything was just,...... GONE........
The streets , where once semi benevolent street gangs had established a lifestyle , Imperfect and sometimes lethal but cohesive enough to ensure rough justice,, there was only water and dead things floating..Those that survived Katrina's initial assault found little charity in the heart of their city... Many died thru the days of waiting for a sluggish federal system to come to their aid.. Others simply fled.. These refugees distributed themselves throughout they country haphazardly, settling near distant relatives, some went where they could make the most of those programs and societal sustenance packages offered by both public and private concerns... Many , many came to Houston ..
With them was a goodly number of the undrowned criminal element ...
