Out of Gas Anything Helps
Out of Gas Anything Helps I've struggled with a headache all day today. After sitting on the balcony, listening to music for God knows how long, I finally decided to just crawl into bed and sleep the rest of the day away. It helped. When I woke up I decided to put myself back together as best I could and head to the gym for just a bit... Just to keep the routine going. And then I saw him. There was a guy, barefoot, standing on the corner by the stoplight holding the cardboard sign that said "Out of Gas Anything Helps". Where I live, this isn't something you see very often. Real... Not real... Who knows. It's a human being and he kind of looked to me like he needed help. So, I rolled down my passenger window and said "I don't have much, but I'd like to help." I gave him the $5 bill I had in my purse. Whether it was a scam or not, I don't know, I'd like to think he really needed help. While my day was not the greatest and I didn't really feel my best, I'd like to think that at least one good thing came out of it. Human kindness. |

Oh, where to start.......... Kindness is free, even when it costs $5 bucks. For me, that's money well spent. There's a particular part of west africa where I visit regularly. It has a small but important tourist economy, and many of the boys who hang around there are on the make. Bumsters they're known as because they constantly 'hassle' the tourists, not in a bad way, just looking for something, anything. But you know what? These people have nothing, and I mean nothing. Nothing that you and I would consider important. They often do not know where their next meal is coming from. (Except for Fridays, the muslim holy day, where many of the guys and their families can be found outside the mosques looking for charity - one of the five pillars of Islam.) People, humans, just trying to make their way in the world, to go from one day to the next. Who am I to judge that? And who am I to refuse that help if it's within my gift to offer it? That was a very kind thing you did McLade. Lovely.

i got out my car at a convenience store and a guy rolled upon a bike asking for change, just change. these days you don't and never really know who sincerely needs help or not but a little kindness, a little charity doesn't hurt. but at the same time you do have to be careful and safe. if the man on the bike wanted to do it, he could've snatched my entire wallet outta my hand and peeled off. of course,i only thought about that afterwards and i'm grateful that he didn't.

I do the same and I know some are just scamming. But that one chance it is real gets to me. I am so blessed. So, if it is real I am okay with it. If not, I never know. But, I may have done some good for someone. It won’t break me. Sometimes we are put where we need to be.

Self-love, you're doing well for yourself and only you can do it. Sleep as long as you need, no guilt. Same with the man on the street. It was a gift for inner thought and reflection. We're not here to pass judgement, give if you can or are up to it, but what he does with it is not our concern. You are finding a good path, well done. Love your blog, so thanks. J

That's a kind gesture. I hope he genuinely needed help.

i worked for a while as a mall security and we..the property owners..didnt allow mooching...i was dispatched to a corner after a report of a moocher..when i got there i had to laugh...his sign read..not gonna lie, just want a good cold beer..and yes..he moved on on request.

I give to them all the time.....i keep bills in the beverage holder for that. I would rather be scammed than not helping someone out. I know.....that some probably have more $$ than me....still i give. The way i look at it.....there was a reason why you left the house on a headache day, and now reading the comments, there was also a reason why you had that 5$ there. This.....to me.....was the reason. Kudos !! ~~

A couple of years ago there was a couple and a dog on the corner outside where I work. Their sign said they were experiencing hard times, anything helped. I was going to pick up a meal for them when a coworker told me she had bought some deli chicken and a side for them as they were there when she got to work too. They fed the food to the dog right in front of her and said what they really needed was some cash assistance. Needless to say, I ended up not doing anything for them. You have a great idea though, with the gift cards.

A well dressed middle aged woman came up to me at a gas station one morning asking for $5 for gas with a big elaborate sob story. I gave it to her thinking how hard that has to be to ask for help. When I saw her jump in her car and drive away without getting any gas it didn't bother me, I figured she really needed it for something and it was just $5. Good for you and your kind heart. We should share when we can.

Whether he was scamming people or not, your act of kindness remains the important part. Leaving me the $5...

This is an uncommon occurrence where I live. I can't tell you the last time I saw someone with a sign needing help.... Maybe Christmas? And, he was looking for only food items to feed his family. I think if I saw it all the time, I might too become jaded, but I do not...

Hi secret_lade thanks for sharing this one sometimes, you just need to go back to bed I did the same thing, and, it felt good have a nice Sunday be safe Dave Matthews - "Windows" When the war is over and we go back to everyday, everyday will it be the same again when you've been turned inside out and outside in? Singing from the windows shadow on the wall, the way they dance not much of nothing and look at this fire burning bright Look at how the children play none of us know what's to come tomorrow but I'm not going out today so dance with me like the time we've got is borrowed Singing from the windows sirens in the dark, where are you going? pretend that it's nothing but look at this fire burning wild Well this is how we keep holding on every day, all day long but sometimes things just fall apart no matter how you try, they won't stop And, no break from any of it.
