A new year is here


Ah, Dear reader, it's been a while.

We have entered a new year, and much has already happened.

Denmark had it's worst train-crash in 30 years, when an empty trailer on a freight-train blew/fell (still isn't fully clear) off of a freight-train, and gashed open the side of a passing high-speed passsenger train. 8 people died, 16 were wounded (none life-threatening) and traffic across a bridge that is a main artery for train-traffic in Denmark ground to a halt. Rescue efforts were hampered by the fact, that the bridge was closed to all other traffic, due to a storm with high winds across the bridge. At the time of hte crash, only trains had been going across for the better part of 12 hours, and some cars had pulled onto the hard shoulder, which is normaly reserved for emergency use, meaning emergency vehicles were having a hard time getting to the site.

I was working in the operations room of Danish Rail, and we were busy, both making plans for the rest of the traffic, thinking out contingency-plans for when we would be allowed to run replacement busses, keeping staff informed of the situation as it changed, updating our website, as well as keeping up with all the 'normal' stuff. For 20 minutes we didn't have contact with the driver of the train, sparking fears that he might be one of the casualties. By a pure miracle he survived without a physical scratch (he literally ducked at the right moment, ensuring his head was 20 cms below the point of impact), but his radio was toast, and his two mobile phones weren't working properly.

When I went home that day, I was more or less shell-shocked, and just went straight to bed, crying.

The next day I was part of getting the trainservice across the bridge up and running again, which was therapeutic. But I was certainly marked by the event, as were all the colleagues around me. I wasn't the only one with tears on her face, when we had a minute of silence that day. I went home to my parents that afternoon, had tea, and a talk (and a therapeutic session with a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle), and a couple of good cries. I felt much better when I went home to bed, and felt much better going into work on the Friday. We luckily had a quiet day, and a colleague and I had a really good session after work, where we practised some centered breathing and meditating.

I have yet to avail myself of professional help, but it has been offered, and I will use it.

Sorry for the rather 'down' post, but sometimes talking/writing about an event is the best way of working through it.
