Poetry and Reality on AFF

I cannot honestly say that I'm a great literary maven or scholar. In fact, I tend to agree with Paul Dirac's appraisal of poetry when he got so sick to fucking death of Julius Robert Oppenheimer--who was a great physicist and didn't need to act like an imperious asshole but sometimes just couldn't help himself--quoting poets to try to impress everyone in the room with how learned and pretentious he was, Dirac said, "Scientists are people who make what is very difficult to understand by most people understandable to anyone. Poets do exactly the opposite." I tend to agree with Dirac's view. Sometimes poetry is like a test in cryptographic reading ability with the aid of an unabridged dictionary and a thesaurus in hand.

When people on Polyamory Date write and post with some allusion to their poems or other works as being some kind of flirtation with actual literature, it's like a D1 collegiate football player playing in a high school JV game and thinking that their play in this game makes them ready for the NFL. Polyamory Date is a seeking-sex site, not a literary journal. Anyone who truly believes their writing is worthy of being published would not be posting on Polyamory Date but rather would be submitting copyrighted manuscripts to either a literary agent or a peer-reviewed literary journal, which are many. If some of my responses to posts seem vitriolic, that is not the intent at all, it's merely to state the obvious: this ain't no literary site so stop thinking you're the next Walt fucking Whitman!
