Lottery Lust Review

Directed by Patty Rhodes. Released by Penguin Productions in 1986. Available on EVN DVD.

Buck Adams plays a lowly accountant named Eddie who wins a million dollars from a scratch-off lottery ticket. After winning, he comes to the conclusion that everyone is becoming friendly with him because of the money. This was a good premise, but there is little emotional drama and the opening crisis with Sheila (played by Gina Carrera) and her tax audit is never resolved. Story Grade: D+.

This feature was shot on video. Medium Grade: C-.

Real locations were used for this production, but there were no outdoor scenes, making it somewhat claustrophobic. Bedrooms weren't particularly visually appealing. Set Design Grade: C.

The sexual performances were generally energetic. According to the DVD artwork, this was one of the last performances of John Holmes. The scene with Nikki Charm and Melissa Melendez was a little odd since they appeared to be taking a shower, yet no water was running and they weren't wet, save for their pussies, I suppose. Sexual Performances Grade: B+.

Buck Adams overacted his part. Renee Summers' role as a loyal maid was a little unauthentic. Jason Fox's acting was terrible. Gina Carrera's character was underdeveloped, but did a fair acting job with it. More could have been done with Nikki Charm and Melissa Melendez, and unfortunately Tracey Adams and Bunny Bleu had very little to do. Acting Grade: D+.

Although better than having her wear high heels, Nikki Charm still wore sneakers during her sex scene on a bed. The outfit that Melissa Melendez wore was nice, but was slightly inappropriate for the occasion. Wardrobe/Make-Up Grade: B-.

The lighting was much too bright and too direct, nearly bleaching out Nikki Charm's skin tone in the shower scene. Lighting Grade: D.

Although the sound quality was consistent, the sex scenes were sometimes a little too quiet without a score behind them when vocalization and moans were lacking. Early sex scenes had somewhat of a score, but it either didn't last for the whole duration, or it was very faint. Sound Grade: C-.

A boom shadow could be detected in a few of the shots and offscreen direction was heard in at least one instance. Melissa Melendez addressed the camera during her scene with Jason Fox which was jarring. The director should have made sure that the issues introduced at the beginning of the movie be resolved by the end. It would have made more sense for Buck's character to wind up with Gina Carrera since she showed an interest in him before he won the lottery money. Directing Grade: D.

There was an attempt made to tell a narrative and to perhaps include a social commentary about the things people will do for money, but it was poorly executed. Using real locations rather than soundstage sets was beneficial, but could have been exploited more. Artistic Merit Grade: C+.

OVERALL GRADE: C.
