Desert Island Discs - my escape

I can't pretend this hasn't been a difficult week for me. On Thursday night I watched the election results through the gaps in my fingers thinking 'Maybe it's time to emigrate'. However today one of my heroes, Sir Bradley Wiggins, appearing on Desert Island Discs so I thought now is a great time to indulge in some positivity and escapism. It wouldn't be such a bad thing to take away with me some tokens of what makes me feel great about Britain but not actually be there - i.e. lick my wounds on a beach in the Turks & Caicos.

I used to say flippantly that I didn't fancy any celebrities, only ordinary everyday women and porn stars. This was never strictly true, though my pin ups never had anything in common with Jordan or Pamela Anderson (because I'm not a moron). It's likely you won't have heard of any of the people below, but this is what the world looks like to me through the prism of my middle class Art values . . .

So I'm going to give you three of my teenage pinups. Starting off with the most obscure, Rachel Goswell, lead singer of Slowdive, who once descended to me in on a silver cloud in a dream, instead of a fanfare there was the low fuzz of a heavily fx-driven guitar wafting out of a Marshall amp . . .

Next up is Anglo-Hungarian hunny Miki Berenyi of Lush. Lush took high pitched voices and echo units to the next level. I once bumped into Miki in Islington on a lunch break, like most indie stars she looked the same in real life as in her publicity shots.

Last but not least, someone who really got me weak at the knees, Sarah Cracknell. Cracknell went to stage school but instead of ending up in a West End musical or manufactured all-girl group she became the lead singer of indie-popsters St Etienne. St Etienne had a lot more chart success than the above two, though they retain a very strong 'who are they?' rating when I talk to my co-workers about music

I'm with the co-workers

The election result was a disgrace to say the least

And, no, I didn't vote SNP.

I better be one of those "ordinary women" you refer to

Why Holly you're pretty enough to choose between being an 'ordinary woman' or porn star (really runs fast and ducks for cover in my Bond-villain style underground bunker )

Yes I did find the result in Scotland to be 'odd' to say the least, from here it looks a bit futile in as much as there probably won't be another referendum for at least another five years, and there is some truth to the 'Vote SNP, get Tory' line. I hate to say it but a lot of English people took the constant anti-Westminster bashing in the referendum debate last year personally and that swayed some floating voters to go Tory as an anti-SNP (not anti-Scottish) fuck you. Is this a really healthy state of affairs in such a small densely populated island, I hope people come to their senses soon and we go back to loving each other!!!

I'm not mad keen on the SNP because I don't really like nationalism full stop, so I don't like UKIP, the BNP or the English Democrats, which are a ridiculous party run out of my home town (oh the shame!) by someone in my local rugby club. But at least the BNP vote tanked by 99.7% - happy days!
