It Never Ends…

I had just finished up detailing my truck this afternoon at about 2pm when “Hank” pulled up my drive. My plan had been to take a little time to relax, maybe read, and then get ready to go out to dinner with some friends and my and her fiancé. I just put the last of the cleaning supplies in the garage as he climbed down out of his pick-up and hobbled over. Hank is in his mid-sixties, has been running cattle his entire life, has had 2 back surgeries, broken several “major” bones in his body and doesn’t really ever go anywhere fast… but as he came up to me he was sure as hell trying.

He explained that he had a heifer (a young female cow that has never had a calf) that was dropping (giving birth to) a calf but that the calf needed to be turned (the calf was a breach with the legs tucked under its body) and he couldn’t get it turned (get the legs out from under the calf’s body and out the birth canal) and he was worried that he was going to lose both the heifer and calf. He asked if I could give him a hand since the vet was still 20 minutes away.

I hopped into his truck we drove the ¼ mile or so to the field where this part of his herd was and we came up to the heifer. She was still doing pretty well… Hank asked me if I could do the pulling since his back wouldn’t hold up if he did. So, Hank kept the heifer from laying down while I stripped to the waist in 50 degree weather, washed up from some water in a bucket and slathered a disinfectant and birthing lubricant on my arm and stuck it up to the shoulder into her uterus and began “gently” pulling one of the calf’s legs around and then the other. It took a little over 25 minutes working between the contractions to get the legs positioned so the calf could get out easier. Once we got the legs right, at the next contraction I gave a tug and the little lady started to come out of her mama. By that time the vet had gotten there and he took over pulling the calf and getting it out as quick as he could so that the calf wouldn’t drown on the uterine fluid.

Once the little lady was out of her mama, we held her hind legs up and head down for a bit to make sure any fluid that may have started to head for her lungs drained out. Within 15 or 20 seconds she started kicking a little and so we put her down and let mama start cleaning her off. Both calf and cow are doing well.

I still got home in time to take a nice long hot shower and be on time for dinner. And I got to participate in the miracle of birth… it is life reaffirming!!!

But I think I’ll take it a little easy tomorrow…

Save a , ride a cowboy!!

You are going to be stiff and sore tomorrow!!!!! Don't envy you having your arm up there during the contracttions! But...wow....isn't it wonderful to be part of the miracle of birth and life?

Do you get to be the godfather?

was your skin soft after that? On your arm?

Not that I noticed, but then I really didn't pay any attention to that. It did hurt... and still does to a lesser extent.
