The sirens have gone off three times today, and three times I have gone to my "safe place," an interior closet. It is hot and muggy here, and while I am not Gay, I'm ready to come out of the damn closet!

In any case thankfully it has all come to nothing. The next round is just rain and ping pong size hail and sixty mile and hour straight wind in about ten minutes --- which won't help the flooding, but all in all only one place in the state had any damage and no one is hurt other than some people not having AC on a muggy night.

The drought is pretty much over though, and we've been reduced from Tornado Warning to Watch (Warning means one on the ground, Watch means they are possible).

I've lived in Tornado Alley since I was a . They can happen anywhere. LA has had them, Miami, New York, London, Transylvania is prone to them. Hurricanes are much worse, we have earthquakes here so we don't miss that, I hate dust storms, wild fires are a pain, but no matter how long you live with them you don't get used to tornadoes.

Anyway the wind is picking up, lightning flashing, and its about to get bumpy. Typical spring night here.

10!

We've had ten in the last two weeks. But our normal is over a hundred per season, but we are a bit bigger than Rhode Island so many of them mostly tear up farmland and a few barns or fences.

Rogers and Hammerstein were serious when they said "where the wind comes sweeping down the plains,"

The ones last night were north of us, and we haven't been hit by one here since the thirties. Even in the city where there were several bad ones while I lived there the closest any came were a mile and a half away and most fifteen miles on the south side of town or ten miles north and east of us. Some places are draws for them like some are for lightning.

At least in this part of the Southwest we don't have ball lightning like West Texas or tumbleweeds on fire rolling down the highway and ninety percent of hurricanes turn well East of us unless they come up through Mexico and Texas off the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Then again, a tornado is over in a few minutes save for power outages, and eight to ten inches is a huge snow for us for a year. We are well away from the nearest river here and the lake would have to really get out of bounds to reach us. Anyway, my place sits up a good two feet off the ground, so it will take a real flood to get us.

I would prefer to have a cellar, but they are expensive here because of ground water, and last week a woman drowned in an old one during the twister.

So if you ever wonder why they sent the Indians here and gave the land away for free --- well, they didn't know about the oil then.

Just rain and thunder blunders until Friday, then here we go again. Of course we had three quiet years with only two bad storms in the state, so we are overdue for a normal year.

Actually I have weather alarms and NOAA emergency radio so I usually have fifteen to twenty minutes notice if anything is actually near, the closet is only for emergency since it is often the only thing left standing in a strike.

Anyway, a week to rest up for round three. Thankfully it is nice today, but muggy.

You get used to it, but never dismissive.
