At Some Disputed Barricade
At Some Disputed Barricade I mentioned yesterday that poets Joyce Cary and Alan Seeger died in the First World War. Seeger wrote one of the great poems of the war that expressed the feelings of many soldiers in the trenches knowing a battle or push was coming. Most soldiers are brave in the face of death, simply not turning and running when every thing in your core tells you to run is bravery. But knowing you have that almost certain rendezvous with death and moving forward because you believe in something greater than yourself is another thing. Seeger's poem expressed the thoughts of many a soldier in the trenches knowing the next minute, hour, or day would mean almost certain death. Seeger and countless others like him went over the top into No Man's Land and left much of youth, dreams, honor, and hope in those fields where poppies grow among the crosses today.
