Bah Love-Bug

Happy Valentines day
I have never been a fan of Valentines day. The deepest heartbreak I ever experienced was when The Love of my life broke up on V-Day. I was 22.
Thirty years later and I still hate this day.
I think my negative feelings began in grade school. The obligatory valentine exchange.. I would pester mom until we made the trip to the local five and dime. I would gaze longingly at the packages of cards, picking the perfect glitter covered theme only to be devastated to find they were out of my budget. I would grudgingly accept the cheaper bling-free version but it wasn't the same. That night I would painstakingly address and sign each card, taking care to assign the proper character to the recipient.
The day would come...cupcakes and the card exchange...the heady mix of processed sugar and Hawaiin Punch.
Now it's chocolate covered strawberries and a glass of wine.
Every where you turn it's teddy bears and big red hearts filled with chocolate. I still get the obligatory card for family and friends but as a single I'm not feeling it.
I wonder ... is this how my Jewish friends feel at Christmas?
Surrounded with marketing aimed at others, obliged to participate out of societal "norm's".
Bah Love-Bug!

Why do people do stupid stuff like that and break up on major holidays? I had a bf I decided I really truly couldn't stand to be with anymore and would break up the next time I saw him... then realized that would be valentine's day. So I sucked it till 2 weeks later just to make sure I didn't ruin the day for him.

I'm surprised I love Valentine's Day as much as I do (it used to be my #1 favorite holiday. Now it's #2)... in grade school kids somehow "forgot" me in the obligatory card exchange. I'd get for everybody, and I'd maybe get 1 or 2. And I've almost always been single on that day.

That said: I've not done the "make gifts for everybody at work or for any random stranger I meet throughout the day etc" in years. Today I'm making it a day all about me Relax, refocus...

When I was married my ex would always send me Orchids for Vday because he knew I prefer live flowers over cut ones. It was the one nod to the day I enjoyed.
