~+~ Labor Day in United States,,
~+~ Labor Day in United States,, The first Labor Day was held in 1882. Its origins stem from the desire of the Central Labor Union to create a holiday for workers. It became a federal holiday in 1894. It was originally intended that the day would be filled with a street parade to allow the public to appreciate the work of the trade and labor organizations. After the parade, a festival was to be held to amuse local workers and their families. In later years, prominent men and women held speeches. This is less common now, but is sometimes seen in election years. One of the reasons for choosing to celebrate this on the first Monday in September was to add a holiday in the long gap between Independence Day and Thanksgiving. If you celebrate Labor Day, do you have any special traditions? Is it just the end of summer and one last day off? Or , as was always our tradition, it was in fact a day of labor, getting caught up on work outside? |

This has always marked the end of summer for me and I try to get to the beach sometime during the weekend. No traditions, per se though. This year I've added an additional week of vacation time - that means I can go to the beach when everyone else is at work or school! Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

We don't have a Labour Day here, but we do have a late August bank holiday. Public holidays here are called bank holidays as banks were the first to give their employees a day-off.

Happy Labor Day!!!! I don't do anything special on this holiday anymore. It used to be my ex and I's last camping trip of the season. "Sweet, steamy, sensuous kisses light the bright fires of passionate lust within us." scott6250
