Quatrains, Terza Rima, and Couplets (You know you love them)!

I've been lax in my postings, but I will soon return to normal.

As I mentioned before, I started doing this Poetry class and I'm currently required to write a Sonnet, which is not as easy as it seems.

I mean, it's easy, but a good one is not easy. A real sonnet (a broad explanation) has 140 (10 per line of stressed and unstressed) syllables, 14 lines, and has a format that, broadly, translates to: abab, cdcd, efef, and gg!

Don't think anyone is really that interested so I won't bother to explain what I just wrote, but in the last 2 weeks I've written three of them and I've been trying to perfect one of them for presentation, any one of them!

I will share one tomorrow (Friday) which is the day I usually share one of my poems with you!

If I even try to begin to put my words into those parameters, I lose it. That is something I struggle with.

It is a struggle but I have to admit, it's fun! I'm really enjoying it.

I haven't read a sonnet in a while, is that the style that employs iambic pentameter also?

Yes, and I'm only now getting it (because I have to). But man, now that I've got it, it's fun!

thanks, I'm interested, and now I'm going to google it to see what you meant because I love to write poetry but I know absolutely nothing about the technicalities of writing it. Look forward to reading more.
Thanks for coming by!

I wrote close to 200 poems over the last few years but I understood that there was a more technical aspect to it than what I was doing.

The information is on-line, but I needed a class format to actually ensure my discipline; and what the class did for me was enable feedback from other people who knew what they were doing, to help me understand.

In a way, doing an on-line class for something like this is (in one way) a rip-off, but at the same time (with my lack concentration or focus) money well-spent.
