David Brooks is one of the more intellectual and decent right wing Republicans. He is someone that has a few principles and has not been totally Trumpified.

He claims to be most attached to the ideals of America as a nation. Diversity is a good thing in his latest column for the NY Times. Hard to be a conservative and a Trump supporter these days.

The ideals of the American nation include openness to immigrants, free trade, hard work, equal rights under law, non-violent protests, independent judiciary, free press, freedom of religion, due process, the right to vote, unions, the right to organize and strike for better pay and benefits, etc. Our history is filled with battles for these rights, which remain under attack and threat from powerful interests opposed to those rights.

I love my neighborhood and Southern California. I also love all of California for its special place as a land of diversity, great opportunity, diverse geography and great variety. I don't feel that level of love for some flat Midwestern places, though the people there are very kind and decent people. If I was born there and grew to know the charms there I might feel more affection for the Midwestern plains.

If California left the US I would be torn; stay or leave California? I think I would stay with California. We have lots of wild characters, but that is part of the charm. Would you stay with your state if it left, or stick with the USA?

I know this is just a thought experiment as no state is leaving anytime soon...
