song writing

I used to write poems, but now I write songs. What is the difference? Well there is lots of overlap, but songs tend to be simpler and more repetitive. Songs generally have one focus and one emotion being conveyed. My song vocabulary tends to be easier to understand. Occasionally I throw in one or two more obscure words just for fun.

I also use a more linear style, but at times I imitate Bob Dylan by using a series of pictures like Mallarme or Baudelaire. Each stanza is a picture and the progression tells the story. Think Highway 61 revisited. If you are going to imitate someone, might as well chose the Nobel prize winner.

The challenge is similar to a crossword puzzle when you add meter and rhyme.

Robert Frost when asked why rhyme said otherwise it was like playing tennis without a net. Rhymes make you discover connections that you would not otherwise find. Writing songs is a lovely inexpensive hobby. No one ever broke a leg writing songs. No animals were injured writing a song. No people were shot on purpose or accidentally while writing a song. You see, family entertainment at its best. Try it for fun.
