Will Shakespeare

A new film opening has the thesis that Will Shakespeare did not write the plays and poems that bear his name.

This controversy has been around for a long time. The snobby Brits could not conceive that such great works could be the product of a public education and the writer not an aristocrat.

Of course no one during Will's lifetime claimed anyone other than him wrote the works. Will hung around the stage, acting and writing, and recycling plots and ideas from other plays and Greek and Roman myths. Seems like the perfect environment to write interesting plays.

Will captured different styles of speech and poetry which would be expected from a talented writer listening to many different people from various stations of life, as would be expected from a traveling actor/writer.

The movie may be good, but I doubt it. "Shakespeare in Love" was excellent and probably a much better film. Or there are many great Shakespeare plays on film...
