Shirley Temple was a leading film actress during the Great Depression. As an adult, she went from a beloved icon to national diplomatic figure, serving under four presidents. Her first diplomatic post was as U.S. delegate to the United Nations by President Richard Nixon in 1969, she was the ambassador to Ghana from 1974 to 1976, appointed by President Gerald Ford, and she was the ambassador to Czechoslovakia from 1989 to 1992, appointed by President George H.W. Bush. In 1988, Temple became the only person to date to achieve the rank of honorary U.S. Foreign Service officer.
