NO SUMMER FUN IN FRANCE

My summer begins when le Tour de France begins. Watching the Tour is my idea of summer fun. Unfortunately Suzy Cortez above, a former winner of Brazil’s Miss BumBum contest, isn’t riding the Tour!

Every morning I turn my television on to watch each day’s stage of the Tour, plus the previous day’s highlights, and I turn my television off in the late afternoon. That’s some serious television viewing!

Roughly how many hours of television do you watch each day?

As expected, this year’s Tour is more open than in recent previous years. Halfway through, Chris Froome is wearing the yellow jersey - le maillot jeune, but he's only a few seconds ahead of Fabio Aru and under a minute ahead of Romain Bardet and Rigoberto Uran. It’s game on!

Last Sunday witnessed one of the most brutal stages I’ve ever seen. Stage 9, spanning 181.5 km, involved three category one mountains, which means very steep climbs and very dangerous descents. The stage incredibly ended in a photo-finish with Rigoberto Uran just edging out Warren Barguil, Chris Froome, Romain Bardet and Fabio Aru.

Stage 9 saw many top riders crash out of the Tour - Richie Porte, Geraint Thomas, Robert Gesink and Rafal Majka all crashed out. Richie Porte, one of the favourites for the yellow jersey, had to be stretchered off in an ambulance after breaking both his collarbone and pelvis.

Two other pre-Tour favourites, Nairo Quintana and Alberto Contador, lost lots of time in Stage 9. Their hopes of wearing the yellow jersey in Paris, I suspect, have effectively ended.

Other highlights include the crash involving Mark Cavendish and Peter Sagan, both green jersey contenders. Mark Cavendish had to retire hurt from the Tour and Peter Sagan was kicked off the Tour for elbowing Mark Cavendish. As a result, Marcel Kittel, who has won five stages already, is odds-on favourite to wear the green jersey in Paris for being the best sprinter.

Another highlight, not widely reported here, is the improved showing of French riders on the Tour. Romain Bardet, Warren Barguil, Lilian Calmejane and Arnaud Démare are having (or were having in the case of the latter) a fine Tour.

Do you have any pressing questions about le Tour de France you want to ask me?

Below are the usual photos for the many Lycra lovers here in blogland.

I have a couple of questions. when the pack gets all bunched up like that, is it"legal" to elbow or use defensive moves to try to eliminate another rider? it seems like it should disqualify the perp.

next. if someone is injure but returns to the race, do they have to start where they were injured? are they given any "time out" for medical assistance?

and the way the bike is tipped so far over on the curves, is it weighted somehow to allow them to do that? can they touch down with a foot if they have to? or is that not allowed. Jaysus, that looks scary.

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

Roughly how many hours of television do you watch each day? Zero - cut the cable last year.

Do you have any pressing questions about le Tour de France you want to ask me?
When are the actually going to get drugs (PEDs) out of cycling. It got to be soooo much I kinda lost interest.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I normally don't watch any TV until I sit down for tea...around 5 in the afternoon. That's for about an hour and a half.
Then again later at night from 9 til 10.30. There's usually a good drama on then.

I'm going to have to catch up on the Tour De France. I've missed all the blood and gore.

I'm a television junkie. .. I am trying to cut down. ... I have been turning it on less and less over the years. .. I'm down to 5-10 hours a day. (A lot of that is news, and a lot of the time it is just on in the background as I am always on the computer.)

I did see that "crash". I was over at my girl's house and she has satellite. I remember telling her that I read a blog about this! .. Not sure if it was live, but maybe. It was about 1am here. (Maybe later.) .. Then I remember reading that Cavendish had been kicked out the next day and many were saying that that was too harsh.

It was entertaining to watch. .. A lot like NASCAR but not as loud. ... I also thought it was cool to learn about the little French towns the race passed through.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

I watch almost no TV, and when I do it's mostly Netflix.

But I DO remember watching the"linda bundas" (pretty butts) on my many trips to Brazil.

This Tour has been brutal for crashes, so many top riders have crashed out. It was designed that way!

Crashes are always serious with road cycling. They don't fake it like in some sports, eg football/soccer, because if they don't finish they don't get picked the next time!

Those skiiny dudes aren't on steroids.
Cycling has made major moves to get rid of drugs in the sport since the Lance Armstrong days. Times have dropped on the Tour de France, which is proof that there are less drugs in the sport.
Of course the sport, like any other sport, isn't totally clean; some riders will do drugs but it's now more individualised than industrialised!

When it's a bunch sprint to the line it's going to get physical. Elbowing isn't allowed. And in this case, Peter Sagan got kicked off the Tour for deliberately using his elbow to push Mark Cavendish into the barriers. But I think it was a harsh decision as sometimes a rider will use their elbows to keep balance on their bike.
If a rider is injured they can get treated on the road but they must start off where they're injured even though the other riders have gone on. They get no tiime allowance for being treated. If they're injured to the extent they need hospital treatment then their Tour is over. A rider has to finsh each stage to win the Tour.
The bikes are made to be as light as possible, that's the best way to race. If they put their feet on their ground, which is allowed, it'lll slow them down.
The Tour is scary and brutal!
