LIBERTÉ, ÉGALITÉ, FRATERNITÉ
LIBERTÉ, ÉGALITÉ, FRATERNITÉ Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité is the motto of post-revolutionary France. Above is a painting of the Storming of the Bastille, a Parisian prison, which signalled the start of the French Revolution in 1789 that eventually led to the death of monarchy and the birth of the republic in France. Today at least 12 people have been murdered in Paris. Three gunmen, still at loose and almost certainly jihadists, entered the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and killed its editor, cartoonists and journalists. Two police officers, guarding the offices, were also killed. Before today’s attack, the magazine’s building was fire-bombed after it published cartoons depicting a naked Prophet Muhammad in 2011. Below is the cartoon, posted in solidarité, which so riled jihadists to seek vengeance. Though I can understand why Muslims may regard such cartoons as offensive, there is no justification for the killing of the editor and cartoonist behind the offending cartoon. Charlie Hebdo's satire is based on equality; the magazine takes the piss out of all religions! Free speech is a very important principle to uphold. It’s upheld in America by the First Amendment of its constitution and it’s upheld in much of Europe through the European Convention of Human Rights. The right of free speech is not an absolute right to say whatever you want. For example, it's a criminal act to publish certatin types of obscene material in America; it’s a criminal offence to promote racial hatred in the UK; and it’s a criminal offence to deny the Holocaust in Germany. Though not absolute, the right of free speech still remains a very important principle in free and open societies. Remember the Nazis destroyed books in their attempt to destroy ideas challenging their version of the truth. I may not agree with what people say but I do agree that people have the right to say what they want. How else can ideas be exchanged and discussed? Ideas are important. How important is the right to free speech? Should there be any limits to the right to free speech? This blog post got serious because I’m listening to the news of what happened in Paris while on this site. My initial idea for this post was a blogland orgy. Another day! |

I was horrified when I turned on the news at lunchtime and saw what had just happened. Freedom of speech is something which I hold absolutely sacrosanct. I may not agree with something that is said but I will defend to the end a person's right to say it. About the only thing I would condemn is anyone speaking with the intent of inciting others to hatred or to commit a crime. ~~Anais Nin~~

Todays incident is another of fanaticism. The perpetrators wanting to silence all opposition, even different views. It is becoming a worldwide problem , this violence being accomplished by a very small group against the majority. How important is the right to free speech? Without it, there is no freedom Should there be any limits to the right to free speech? That is a delicate question, there should be limits, but what they are I am not sure

How important is the right to free speech? Should there be any limits to the right to free speech? And in the twenty first century we're still discussing the importance of free speech. In the USA we are at odds about torture- what exactly it is and whether we should use it. There are minds that are warped shut. A world of free speech can never get in. Sometimes I actually succeed in convincing myself that the arc of history swings toward progress...and then, this. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

Jihadists defile the principles of the very faith they claim to defend. Find pleasure in giving pleasure

Very scary and sad. If we do not have the right to speak our minds, call out injustice, shine light on the truths, then we have nothing.

They are such cowards . I will never understand why they choose to murder innocent people who are simply voicing an opinion. It was so sad to watch this event unfold on the news yesterday.

ps - this is a difficult one. My gut reaction is that there should be no restriction on free speech, let people say what they want, the fools will surely show themselves for what they are. I even believe that racists, homophobes and the like should be allowed to spout their vitriol as it shows up the truly ridiculous nature of their belief and bigotry. On the other hand, in a world where extremism and fanaticism seems to be on the increase, it's difficult to see how we can keep safe without some of our liberties being compromised.

we must never lose the right to free speech...

I totally agree but unfortunately how the West responds is sometimes counter-productive - reduced freedoms, increased surveillance and more reasons to be a jihadist!

I've been waiting for a week for the postman to deliver the invite to your decadent toga party! The post is clearly not what it used to be!

I would like to reverberate the statements above and second sexysixties2 about using free speech to incite hatred. These statements sum up my feelings on the matter with absolute precision.

I agree with you absolutely. The fallout from this incident is still playing out in Europe. The UK prime minister has even begged the US president to get Google etc on board in the so-called war on terror.

The magazine did carry on publishing after this. On the front cover, it again portrayed the Prophet Muhammad forgiving those who killed its staff. Because of this portrayal, demonstrations and deaths have occurred around the Muslim world. It may be offensive, but it's satire!

Pal said it all. No greater affront exists in the muslin faith than taking innocent life. Jihadists defile the principles of the very faith they claim to defend. I can understand why Muslims see the Charlie Hebdo cartoons as offensive, but it's just satire!

Very scary and sad. If we do not have the right to speak our minds, call out injustice, shine light on the truths, then we have nothing. As Martin Niemöller said: "First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me."
