Movies that have made me cry.....

I was thinking about how there are quite a few movies that have lifted our spirits and/or entertained us with their wizardry and fireworks...

Then I thought of some movies which I think I just cannot see without crying coz their subject matter is of a rather serious nature.

Amongst them in no preferential order:
1. 7 Pounds
2. The Pursuit Of Happyness
3. Dead Man Walking
4. The Colour Purple
5. Awakenings
6. The Elephant Man
7. Life Is Beautiful
8. The Kite Runner
9. Terms of Endearment
10. Empire of The Sun
11. I Am Sam
12. The Killing Fields
13. 25th Hour
14. The Wrestler

These movies don't just show a glimmer or a section of sadness, but this melancholy pervades the entire fabric of the duration. So much so that sometimes I have to stop and walk away for quite a while.

Obviously, I think there are so many more excellently sad movies which I have yet to come across. Maybe soon.....

If you know of any, please do mention them.....

Schindler's List was one of those flicks I've had to stop and walk away from. The Elephant Man is an incredible movie and recall its first impressions on me in my teens; Profound. Beach's is another heart breaker. I'll have to check out some of these shows you've listed.

Schindler's List - good choice, I'd forgotten about this.

Beach's - I will check it out. Thanks.

Elephant Man - I was not even in my teens yet when I first saw the posters, and they frightened me away at that time. Caught on the telly though; profound, indeed.

Thanks for stopping by...

Empire of The Sun is one of my favorite movies

Also, I must apologize for assuming that The Shawshank Redemption would be on your list.

If you don't mind subtitles I found the Chinese film Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl to be a beautiful film but a tearjerker as well.

Cool post!

I first saw EOTS in my early teens, and the solitude and fortitude resonated with me. The young John Malkovich and Ben Stiller impressed, but of course the young star Christian Bale rightly took the cake.

Shawshank Redemption - I had actually had just re-visited this about 3 weeks ago. And yes, while it certainly is a bleak film, I actually felt more combative and indignant at most scenes rather than sadness. I dunno, maybe it's just me? Although I have seen this movie on many "sad" lists just earlier today.

Xiu Xiu - I will definately look it up! I did not mention any non-english films in this post, and maybe that deserves its own day in the sun, soon.

Thanks for stopping by!

Oh! The humanity!!!

Cry as in what kind of crying?

I watched the new movie called 'we bought a zoo' and cried because of the happy family dynamics and how they dealt with the loss of their mom.

I watched moneyball with bradd pitt and cried and cried because I could relate to him and his daughter's relationship, but also how hard the guy worked to make things work.

I cried in the theater at Last Samurai when the lord was dying on the field at the end...

I cry when I watch my neighbor totoro because of the cute sister relationship that's presented.

I think I even cried when I saw 300 at the end when the story was finished being told.

I notice though that I'm pretty sensitive when the "blended family" topics come up and are portrayed fairly relistically. And usually because it's heartwarming, not because it's sad, or depressing.

Maaannn! That's a lot of crying there, dude!

Lol... Just kidding...

You've described moments or sections of movies which tug at our hearts at certain points of time in a movie. And yes, there are plenty of such moments in a lot of movies across time.

I guess the ones I've referred to are movies which deal with deep and heavy subject matter, which rather pervades the entire (if not all of it) fabric of the film; the gravitas of bleakness, that might be one way of looking at it.

But, yeah, I cry too (or rather, I try not to cry; unsuccessfully most times) whenever family issues (especially father/son or siblings stuff) pull at our heart-strings....

You know, I will say this. I've never seen schndler's list. And to be honest, I probably never will.

I stay away from movies that I know will illicit those kinds of downer feelings. I avoid, I really do. I watch movies that will fill me with feel good feelings. I have a very hard time, watching people having a hard time. Especially war crimes or torture, or children getting abused or hurt and slasher type movies.

Those are feelings that I caa live without.

Not sure if that makes sense or not, but it's what I do.

I would much rather watch a heroic or comedic B type movie with bad acting that sit througha schindler's list holocaust epic writen and directed and multi-award winning type of movie.

I used to watch a tV show religiosly a long time ago in the life network called Real Life in the ER. They would go around to hospitals and record what the night was like on the shift.

In the beginning it was ok, people would come in from work accidents, or drive by shooting, and the odd car accident. Eventually the show became more and more about car accidents. And then more and more with kids involved.

I had to stop watching. The show during the beginning was about the doctors and the triunphs about helping people that came in. By the time I stopped watching the series had gone all out Reality show and they were just showing the drama for drama's sake. Heart rending stories only... Mangled children, brides losing their grooms, parents dying...

Oi know there are heroics in movies like schindler's list, or monster or dogboy... But to get to the heroics, you have to stomach the abuse,

I can watch it and do something about it in RL. On the screen... I can't do anything but be a bystander.

Well said, my friend!

Your words got me thinking about how sometimes such shows can be taken to extremes by the producers and the powers-that-be....

Sure hate thinking that they do it coz they think they are satisfying a want of the audience, as perverted as the want may be...

Maybe one important aspect to note is that we watch the movies which appeal to our sense of escapism. Don't you wish you had were Harry and had a Sally in your life? etc etc? That you had the the laughter and the fun the comedies have? Maybe it's what's missing in our life that causes our minds to go on auto-pilot and search for it...

For me, I don't think I go our and out to look for heavy cinema. I chanced upon these movies coz the actors were great, and the timid summaries did not give any sense of what was to unfold inside.

But, yeah, if I had a choice? Sure, rom-coms and adventure win hands-down everytime....
