THE SUMMER
THE SUMMER THE SUMMER I think of Memorial Day as the starting line for summer. June 21, is really that line, but Memorial Day seems to fit inside my head neatly and tells me summer has begun. June 21 being the summer solstice, marks the longest day of the year, and on the desert where we live, the longest day is very, very long. First light of the rising sun hits here at approximately 4:30 A.M, and if M. and I want to get anything done outside our house, we have to wipe the sleep from our eyes, leave breakfast for later, and get a move on. Because there's seldom any clouds in our sky, and the air is very dry, with the humidity in the single digits, as soon as that big ball of fire lights the sky, the temperature starts to rise rapidly. Of course when the sun sets, which on June 21 is around 9 PM, the temperature drops just as rapidly as it climbed at daybreak. July 4th is always a big event for this area because of all the military installations around the Mojave. Usually M. and I can sit in comfortable lawn chairs (or, out here, sand chairs), at 10 P.M. on July 4th, and watch two different fireworks programs without having to drive anywhere. The first and largest and most colorful display of fireworks lights our sky to the East, about eight miles away... This display comes from the main headquarters of the 29 Palms Marine Corp base. The smaller display can be seen about 15 miles to the Southeast, and comes from the little city of Twentynine Palms. When July comes around, M. and I are mostly housebound during July and most of August. The daytime temperatures on the desert at this time of the year are at least 110 each day, and can easily reach 115 or even 120... Temperatures this high can play havoc on vehicles. Even brand new cars in perfect shape can experience tire blowouts and other mechanical breakdowns due to the high heat. Before cell phones arrived, quite a number of people lost their lives each summer by having a breakdown at the hottest part of the year and being in a place where nobody was around. It doesn't take very long for a person to die from a score of things that can happen to our bodies when we're exposed to such high heat and low humidity. When M. and I go anywhere during the peak of the summer months, we always carry a couple of gallons of water with us, make sure our spare tire is in perfect shape, fully charge our cell phones, and make sure we have a shovel, a good hydraulic jack, a large brimmed hat, and gloves with us. (When it's that hot, if you touch any metal exposed to the sun, your hands will be burned). Even though this summer will be the 37th summer I've gone through on this desert, it still fascinates me. Sometimes the nights during this time of year are fantastic. When the moon is full, the beauty of the nighttime Mojave, is beyond my ability to describe. Be well, my friends, and may you all find the love you're looking for. by david stardust, Monday afternoon, June 2nd, 2014.. |
