Vinyl Fetish

Oh man, those old LP's...

If an album was made right
you started it off...and
the first song
or two
brought you in,
then,
by the time it was over
a distant disconnect
was the interruption
of the stylus
hitting the label

with a dull amplified
ca-thud ca-thud
ca-thud ca-thud
ca-thud ca-thud

They were labor intensive,
those old records.
You had to get up
every so often...
...a little longer as time went by...
and change 'em.
A side could be anywhere
from fifteen minutes
to half an hour.
some,
went on forever...

All that mattered
was
how far did it take
you.
And there was all that
readable print.
The covers were amazing.
... condensed museums
of icons, all
past,
and all future...

Sure, I know,
we were younger
and probably
at least somewhat
altered.
Unbound spirits
celebrating all things
possible.
The artwork ...was art.
You could look at it
over and over.

and the sleeves
if they didn't have just bogus
black and white RCA advert crap on it
might have the lyrics
or some other
myth building information.

How many relationships had to survive
the co-mingling of the albums?
...Did you mark them?
...or trust that we would each know?
oh,
and how to sort them
genre? alphabetical?
piled up as last played?
and handling them...

and then
how many of these dependent albums
actually made it home with their 'parent'
after a bad break-up?

Advances in Technology
have changed
our point of
view

Back then,
there were pauses
while we chose another record,
the room tittered at will,
calling out requests
or filling in mythology.
On the radio,
which no one
was responsible for
the voice was either cool,
or not

now,
in silence
we listen alone
to a Walkman
or an I-pod,
as we soundtrack our lives.
The ritual of sharing,
the of rolling joints
on the covers
all gone...

"gone are the days,
when we stopped to decide,
where we should go,
we just ride"

all solo's from here on out.
No more harmonies
of Wooden Ships...
no more fuzz of a
Fender reverb tube...
the digital thing ,
the ole one two,
is upon us,
now.

The first digital voice
I ever heard
gave me time ,
and temperature...
no rhythm
no blue...
and
I never
ever
danced to it.

a brief comment

what the PTB would call
a Public Service Announcement.

I like this little piece
and it is a pleasant- (insert poll here...lol)
diversion
from my usual tirades...

I read a lot
I've done a lot
I've done a lot wrong...
Parochially
I'm right on schedule,
but that's a whole 'nutha blog

My spirit is an artist
small 'a'...
my writing...
smashed glass...
mosaics...
shards
of familiarity.
I have no answers...
I hope to raise questions
in you
my salvation.

I have gotten where I am
unconventionally.
The cost has been
the subconsciously shared
essence of security.
I trust in my skills
and my ability to fail.
All parts are equal.
Untested,
I am always aware
of the bargain...
I have another soul waiting
and we know...
all
leads to the last moment.
if then you do not receive
you
shall not be
received.
you shall not perish
you just shall
again

so...
these posts
the politics
the economics
are my way of trying to be
an artist.

these things are vague
to most people
purposefully.
they don't have to be...
you CAN have a feel for them
I try to make reference...
names...
or dates...
or incidents...
and the curious can...
learn
I am not a delivery system.

I am an artist.

A politician makes the reality for you
an artist only makes the reality
if it resonates with you.

too much information....I know
but today
I feel the need to say it.

Great post, and glad you said it.

Coiincidentally, I started listening to vinyl again a few weeks back. It's nice finding old friends for a fraction of the cost of their digital doppelgangers. They sound way better, too.

I wonder....

Should I admit to having records here that are 78 RPM records?

I'm re-reading this just because
The first digital voice
I ever heard
gave me time ,
and temperature...
no rhythm
no blue...
and
I never
ever
danced to it

is so effing brilliant, and because ca-thud ca-thud is reminding me that on my new vinyl kick I need to track down what those kids over at Sonic Youth did with their guitars shimmering into a locked groove at the end so that the platter plays for eternity or at least until my cerebellum explodes out of the back of my head with the perfection of it all.
