Intellectual Inconsistency

Okay I don’t want to make this a political blog, so if you don’t want to read my frustrations that are partially political then click the back button now, no one will blame you. Hopefully the next post will be more fun/sexy.

Something is just driving me crazy. That thing is intellectual inconsistency. I’ve been seeing a lot of it since I started paying attention to politics and I’ve seen if from just about every political party. But it seems to me that it has been put on steroids this election season. Even more so since Trump won the Electoral College.

Now if it was just some jar heads online that I didn’t know, I wouldn’t care. Hell there are people on my FB feed that I don’t know how they got there who post ugly things around politics. Those people I don’t really care about. I don’t replay to their posts and scroll by. What gets me is when someone I know or knew growing up posts something ugly or intellectually inconsistent. Which is something I’ve been dealing with constantly the last couple days. Last warning this is where the rant will start, last chance to turn back.

So it all started Monday night, I saw someone (who well call B for simplicity sake) post something against Starbucks pledging to hire 10,000 refugees. His argument boiled down to what about the vets. I let this one slide by, because I was behind on the news and didn’t know enough about it to make an intelligent comment. Maybe Starbucks was helping vets too, I didn’t know (just for the record they have been hiring vets and helping their families for years including a recent pledge to hire 10,000 more vents here in the US that dates back before the refugee pledge). And I’m all for helping vets, so I let it slide. So no real problem so far.

Yesterday (Tuesday) morning before work I saw another post of his that bothered me. It was a sign he made. Basically saying he stands behind homeless vets and not refugees or immigrants. So I replied. Simply pointing out that the two things are not related. If you are being intellectually consistent you can stand behind both. It isn’t an A verses B situation. His reply to that was broken sentences that broke down to their being no room for anyone to come into the country. The Refugees being detained can stay on the other side of the boarder (inferring that they came from Mexico) and again stating that we needed to “step up” and help the vets. So me being an educator by trade had to drop some knowledge on him. Pointing out that the people being detained were detained coming into the country with visas and green cards, meaning the government has already said there was room for them here and that they were here legally. Then went on to point out that if he wants to support the vets, to support them. Fight for getting the VA more staff and funding so that vets coming home with physical and mental scars can be helped when they need it, fight against people who foreclose on vets homes (like Mnuckin) fight against those in government who want to put a hiring freeze on federal jobs that give priority hiring to vets. To this he never responded.

That brings us to today. Where he said something else that I tried to let roll off my back, but more intellectual inconsistency has me worked up again. Apparently he was called ignorant and racist by someone. So he railed on about the racist thing how he’s part Arabic and his are half Mexican and how this makes him not a racist. He went on to say he served in the military for 10 years to fight for American freedom and how the people marching and protesting (presumably for the detained refugees) are “PUSSYs” Ok so here we go this is someone I knew in high school and to be fair I thought he was a jackass back then. But want to give the benefit of the doubt. So I wouldn’t comment on the ignorant or racist claims to him. But let’s be honest here. Being a racist has nothing to do with where you or your ancestors came from. It is about what is in your mind and heart (Hitler was half Jewish on his mother’s side and he was still bigoted against Jews). While I don’t know for sure what is in there, it’s obvious that there is evidence from his posts and blind support of Trump that he may be very bigoted. But then maybe he’s just not articulating himself well. So benefit of the doubt even if it’s not earned at this point. But that isn’t what bugged me, anyone would be upset about being called a racist. As for the ignorance claim, well what is ignorance? It’s just a lack of knowledge about a particular subject. I’m ignorant about nuclear physics or Trigonometry. I don’t know much or hardly anything about those subjects, so I’m ignorant about them. Though I do understand some use that term as a general slam to call someone stupid and can understand why someone would be upset about being called ignorant. So that isn’t the part that bugged me. No what bugged me was the inconsistency of saying he fought in the military for American freedom, then in the next sentence calling the people marching and protesting pussies. Calling the people who are using that freedom he fought for pussies. No that isn’t how this works. Either he fought for freedom and the constitution, which means they have every right to do that. You don’t have to agree with their stance, but in order to be consistent you have to agree with them doing it to voice their beliefs. Either that or you actually served in the military so that people wouldn’t challenge you, or look up to you, just because. Which was it? You don’t get to say I served for freedom …. How dare you use that freedom to disagree with my point of view. Not only that, but to stoop to name calling. You know what name calling is? That is what someone does when they can’t win in the realm of ideas. That is you saying “My ideas are inferior and I can’t beat you on the facts and merits of my argument. So I have to try to bully you by calling you a name.” No that isn’t how this works. You have every right to disagree with the protesters ideas. But saying you served for freedom then complain when people use it to protest things they see as immoral, illegal and anti-American are less than for using that freedom. No if you want to disagree make an argument using facts against them if you can. But let’s be honest here you can’t because you don’t understand the issue, either purposefully or accidentally. Calling people expressing their first amendment rights names meant to set them as a less then is ignorant. You fought so that they had the right to protest, and they are using that right. Again don’t agree, fine you don’t have to. But be consistent. Come up with a real argument against them based on merits of the argument and I will gladly fight for your first amendment right to state that argument. But I will also fight for their first amendment right to dispute you on the merits of your argument. But when you resort to bully tactics like some school yard bully, oh fuck NO!!! You can turn that of a bitch sideways and shove it right up your ass. This isn’t you stating an opinion, this isn’t an attack on the ideas. This isn’t a debatable issue. This is you attacking people, attacking their rights and trying to through intimidation shut down a conversation that YOU CAN’T WIN AND YOU KNOW IT!!!!

Sorry about that for anyone who sat through it. I know this isn’t normally the place for it. I’ll start looking into a place to open an offsite blog to vent these things in the future so you don’t have to put up with it.
So to loosely tie this to a sex site. What are your thoughts on sleeping with someone who has the opposite political opinion? Would you do it?
