Embracing a Misogynist

In recent years, many Americans have called for a reckoning of famous men publicly accused of misogyny — the verbal kind, violent kind, or both. While 2014 was declared perhaps “the best year for women since the dawn of time,” 2016 brought the moment for more women to speak up.

The 2016 presidential campaign was caught up in that moment. President-elect Trump was accused of grabbing women’s breasts, reaching under their skirts, pinning and kissing them without consent, walking in on them changing, and more. The media resurfaced lewd comments he made to Howard Stern and Billy Bush.

Democrats and Republicans condemned Trump’s words; after the leak of his 2005 “grab them by the pussy” brag to Bush, Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus said “no woman should ever be described in these terms or talked about in this manner. Ever.” Democrats hoped the tape would be the end of Trump. The day of its release, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts called Trump a “selfish little sleazeball, a man who will never be president of the United States” — and she was just talking about his taxes. But in spite of these lewd acts, Trump won.

Public displays of sexism spurred by Trump's win have become more evident particularly on college campuses. On Wednesday at Wellesley College, two men drove through campus in a black pickup truck waving a Trump flag, allegedly harassing and spitting at women of color, according to students and faculty.

Donald Trump’s election has emboldened this behavior; if people voted for him knowing he sexually harassed and assaulted women and he was still elected, why should these men be held accountable for their actions?

So, how did a country that seemed intent on holding prominent men accountable for sexism elect a man so widely condemned as a sexist? The next question: How will women get through the coming four years?

I think people don’t want to necessarily admit that we still live in a very sexist society. Just because we’re having a conversation about sexism doesn’t mean attitudes have changed.

how did a country that seemed intent on holding prominent men accountable for sexism elect a man so widely condemned as a sexist? The short answer is ignorance. Education funding is not a priority because is keeps the masses ignorant and easy to sway with fear and BS.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Those that I know that voted for him ignored the sexist racist remarks. Their votes were bases on fear. The fear of losing their guns, the cost and penalties with healthcare, jobs and other thing they thought Clinton would or would not do. And of course the e-mail crap.

Since our government hasn't represented us for decades. The fact that the republican part abandoned their candidate and he goes on to win tells me that there was another agenda they preferred whether or not anyone in the party wanted it.I would love to see a woman in that office and as a matter of fact I would love to see a Latina grab that spot.I also believe that sexism
shouldn't be condoned.Should we castrate them, parade them through the streets? What about his wife and children should they be stoned for loving and harboring a sexist? So you are telling us that you have never heard a sexist comment from any of the men you know or have known all your life.

Not word one about Bill Clinton and the disrespectful way he treated his wife while holding the most powerful office in the world. One would think someone being connected with a site that breeds sexist comments and disrespect towards women from time to time might just be talking from both sides of their mouth.

I get where you are coming from and I agree. With the ever increasing sensationalism of people owning their own sexuality and their huge desire to make sure everyone knows about it(men and women)We'll be hard pressed to
see any thing change. The good news is that the delegates who put him in office are nowhere near the amount of people we'd have to expose if we counted the peoples vote.Delegates names are public knowledge. The bad news is that they aren't all men!

Using more than all the road!

all notable people in positions of power or fame are debased perverted disgusting people it is a closed club , be like us , do what we do or you don't get the position . mankind is inherently imperfect and violent ,just look at history .the media portray people as their owners decide ,true or not ,and mostly it is lies to paint the picture they want so they get power and money , believe none of what you read ,none of what you here and 25% of what you see. integrity is dead, honesty is dead, no one is perfect especially people of influence .liberals are the most intolerant, crooked, violent , ignorant people on earth ,It is they who foment the violence and hatred in the name of causes to suppress free speech ,and open dialog To demand money ,to demand full control .hillary has had people killed , been incompetent, stolen , lied under oath, supported the killing of 53million unborn black women ,but she speaks so kindly ... give me a break in private she is a racist arrogant hateful conniving cretin. I personally know the whitehouse chef from bills first administration , you would not believe how she treats people .the liberals need to be the ones who start to act like grownups and stop throwing tantrums over every little perceived imagined and made up slight to their thin skinned emotionally immature sensibilities . Let the first person who is without fault cast the first stone in the glass house .I don't see jesus anywhere in the democratic party .

Everyone acting out should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and for hate crimes or sexual assault where appropriate. As far as I'm concerned Trump should be prosecuted for incitement and is unfit because of the way he handled his campaign. He has insulted and disrespected the anti-discrimination laws of this country. I want to see him convicted for the Trump University scam and impeached or better yet disqualified before he even takes office.

He was elected because he played the hate and the fear game and did it well for his target audience. Trump deluded the fools into believing he was going to fix the economy. His followers actually believe he isn't really like that, that it is all just an act to get attention. He won't do half of what he says and will allow the Republicans to get away with a lot of things that they have been drooling for the power to do. But remember he isn't really a Republican of the right wing kind.

Women are going to have to stand up for their rights and be vocal about it as well as litigious.

The worse the economic conditions are and that includes loss of jobs or benefits rising prices etc., and there has been tough times for a while now, the more people boil and it comes out at anyone that is different be it race, sex or whatever.

Vive La Difference

I have pledged to being a safe person in the next four years.
I will wear a safety pin on my shirt, letting people know that.
I have always stepped in and gotten involved when someone was yelling at another person or threatening to strike another.
My kids have gotten frightened before but I step in and have not had anything bad happen.
I will continue acting like that to help others.
I once stepped in when an abusive women screamed at her husband.
I fear for our girls...

53℅ of white women voted for Trump, 2/3 of white women without college degrees and 45℅ of white women with college degrees. Even among Latina women the number was about 30℅. This sounds like the fear of immigrants who don't assimilate and threaten the prevailing way of life and their own safety outweighed the negatives of Trump's actions.

..and endorsements from Conservative women like Ann Coulter on the same rationale didn't hurt at all. Maybe there's something to that line of thought.

I remember stepping in on a man verbally abusing a woman in the subway. two other women stepped up to help. not a single man did a thing.

she came with us. women...

kitkat has it right........you see it, you stop it. report it and make sure something is done about it.

it's scary times folks. and the number of folks I know who have reported incidents in just the first week is pretty damn frightening.

I will NOT embrace Trump. but I will stand with anyone who is bullied, who is trampled, who is vilified. I am an American and I will not allow it.

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

Attitudes about racism have not changed a whole hell of a lot either, have they? We were told by certain hypocrites that since we had elected a black president that racism in the U.S.A. was dead. This gives us a clue- these morons are so shallow, crass and stupid that they will offer up any hollow assertion that all our ills are now healed, hoping to go back to business as usual. Their time is short. They think they have won something with this massive and vindictive "Fuck you!" to non-white, non-male, non-european, non-Christian un-Americans. They're wrong. They're on the wrong side of history and the wrong side of progress.

And what do you think about the latest comments circulating about our current first lady? Crass and disrespectful is starting to become the norm now that the majority has aligned with a man who has no filter when it comes to sharing his prejudices.

There's a play by Eugene Ionesco, "Rhinoceros", that portrays what's going on here. It's collective insanity on a massive scale. As I write this I'm listening to conservatives on NPR explain that Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon is not a racist, that he's not anti semitic or misogynist. That woman in West Virginia will make such a remark as she did and then flatly deny that she's a bigot. These people are aware that there is such a thing as the internet, where what they've said is recorded, they just don't care. As long as they deny it they think it's been negated. Trump and the modern Republican party have given a free pass to recreational liars.

Looking from afar I can't believe that either candidate got through the party selection process!
And the voters that looked past the racist/sexist nature of Mr Trump, there is no offset on who and what he is vs what you think he is going to do for you.
You are in for a very regressive 4 years

Does the truth matter to Trump voters? I think not. They don't get their information from sources that report the events you mention.

I would like to think (and hope) that people voted for Trump because non-college educated citizens have lost a lot of ground in last 16-20 years. People who used to make $100,000-150,000 are now have their incomes cut in half. Those jobs are gone.
They probably saw hope and said to themselves "what do they have to lose"

I hope it is not the case that people didnt vote for Clinton, because they liked to be "grabbed by the *****" or they hate their Mexican or Muslim neighbor.
