My Greek Odyssey

I just came back from a 2 week vacation to Greece. I went to visit Athens for 5 days, Santorini for 7 days and Mykonos for 3 days. Each place was so different. Athens is more developed, and very cosmopolitan. This area is very fast pace, high in fashion, with lots of shops and history. I went to visit the Acropolis, which was very impressive. I found out it only took 8 years to complete this monumental task. The plaka was busy with lots of places to eat and lots of items to buy and bargain with. Athens reminded me of New York.

Then I flew to the beautiful island of Santorini. I can understand now why 40% of all the post cards are of Santorini. It is in my opinion one of the most beautiful islands in the world. The picture on this post is of Santorini. The island was much bigger at one time. About 1500 BC, a huge eruption causing massive destruction created a huge creator and destroying many of the islands surrounding that region. This creator was filled in with water from the Aegean Sea, creating one of the most panoramic views I have ever experienced. Life was so easy going there and the people are extremely nice. If you ever have an opportunity to visit Greece, you have to have Santorini on your list as a must see place.

My last place was the island of Mykonos. It is considered one of the top 2 places in the world for partying. I have to agree, it is a wild place. To balance the wildness, I found a nice quiet beach on the island called Yialos beach, where small white houses and hotels all trimmed in a pretty blue, overlooking a calm beach of white and golden yellow sand. The last night there was a Greek night at one of the restaurants, where they had some professional greek dancers. It was fun because they were picking people out of the crowd to dance and they didn't know I use to Greek dance for the Greek festivals when I was a , so I was able to keep up...and it was a blast. It was sad to leave, but it was also good to come back to my home.

My dad came over back in 1938 when he was only 15, not knowing one word of English searching for better opportunity. He worked hard all his life and never had an opportunity to return. This was my first visit to my ethnic background and it was a nice experience. As a , I would remember my father describing Greece to me, and now I can fully appreciate everything he told me. The thing that always would stand out for me was how blue and clear the water is. You could see 20 to 30 feet down and it was so crystal clear. I plan on returning in a few years, and I will have to pick some different islands to visit. So if you ever get an opportunity to visit Europe, please don't overlook Greece. It is a beautiful country with lots of history!

Greece has long been on my list of places to visit, now you've just made that "more".

I make mistakes, I am out of control & at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best. ~Marilyn
