Canadian Bloggers Week??

I am abashed I suppose. Here its Canadian Bloggers week and I seem to be 1) Canadian and 2) A blogger....hmmmm....well, ok, then that's 2 for 2 right?

OHHHHHHH!!!!! You want a blog about Canada??? Ahhhh, now I understand...sorry OpenAgenda...I missed that part...

So Canada, eh?

Well first off...my dad was born here, of British parents, so he's a first generation Canadian...my brother and I were born here, after my Dad married a sweet Dutch girl in the Netherlands after the War. So we're second generation Canadians.

I married an American girl, who's parents were Canadians, so that makes our third generation Canadians...and they are married (or one soon will be) to girls born in Canada from Canadian parents, so our grand will be Fourth generation Canadians...

And that is quite typical for Canadians. It usually takes three or four generations to be Canadian on both sides. That's cause we are so accepting and truly international...lol. But it is true! I did some research...Canada has been an independent country for 144 years...that's a bit over 7 generations...so its not surprising that many Canadians are under 5 generations old. But unlike some other countries we seem to have a penchant for international marriages. I only know a few people who are 5 or 6 generation Canadians because somewhere they got involved with an extra-country person or two. We are actually more of a melting pot in some ways than our Southern Neighbors. I say that because we have a much bigger cross cultural imprint than most nations in the world. We speak more than two languages, although only two are official (French and English), but have a host of languages taught in our schools...from Ukrainian to German to French to Italian to Hebrew to several First Nations languages to Spanish to Dutch to Greek to now even some African dialects. We are very proud of our individual and collective heritage and for the most part don't discriminate. I say for the most part because there are sad sad people in every bunch. Perhaps we just hide ours better.

We have 4 major political parties and often have elections that don't show a clear majority...but because we tend to get along we can govern anyway. And we don't get too upset if our neighbors are from a different political party...heck we used to have a party that had a platform that if they ever got elected they would immediately resign. Now that was a cool party...full of fun, piss and vinegar...lol...they were called the Rhinoceros Party and were actually quite fun. One of the members almost got elected in Quebec one time (lost by 70 votes out of 50,000). Mind you Quebec has a whole different set of rules when it comes to Canada anyway...but the rest of us just smile and nod and roll our eyes when it comes to Quebec...lol.

I read that in some parts of the states people won't talk to you if you're Republican or a Democrat...that makes no sense to me as a Canadian because here all parties are similar and just have different types of leaders. In our last election the best leader came second, he was a great man that everyone respected. He would have been a great Prime Minister but he died of Cancer seven months after the election...truly a sad day for Canada. And I'm not even from his political party...see how well we get along? imagine a Republican saying that about a Democrat??? Not gonna happen.

At times Canadians feel like they invented winter...and even if we didn't invent it we certainly have perfected it. We had to...it last 6-8 months up here depending on where you live. Lol.

We can even have tremendous fun in winter...mmmmm....although being outside in -40 degrees without a jacket is just plain NOT SMART.

We hold many world records...Largest 24hr Food Drive, Largest Hamburger, Most cars washed in 8 hrs, Most Nationalities in an Online Chat room, Largest Ice Cream Cake...and some silly ones too...Most combines harvesting one field, Most people carrying a water bottle on their heads at one time, etc.

We have so many talents and we're also just plain nice. We actually are taught "nice" in school...I can remember a teacher of mine in the early years of school saying "Quixy, we're Canadian, we do things that are nice! Now apologize!" I found myself saying something similar 20 some years later when I was a teacher!! We just breathe "nice"...what can I say...

A room full of people arguing? the Canadian is the one who tries to settle everyone down and see each other's side.

So there you have it...my contribution to CBW...The only thing Canadians don't like?? Toronto!! Lol.

Have a great day, eh?

Good evenin', man!

Good post, but remember that MANY Americans despise both primary political parties here, for they are basically the same.

Oh, I want to be that guy in the photo with 5 HOT Canadian Ladies.

I think I could imagine better ways of warming them up than that pitiful little fire!

Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum
Audentes Fortuna Iuvat
Politicians. Lampposts. Assembly Required.

Ahhhh.... the Rhinoceros Party. LOL

Did you know there is a Pirate Party as well Quixy? I live in a pretty high-profile riding - well, in terms of the slimeball politicians it churns out - many a time I have almost put my X on the Pirate Party.

LOVE the picture too! Shhhhhh Keep that under wraps or the other nations will want to come to ALL our parties!

I am a celebration of willful chaos and a hugger.
